Event Description
Value of KM World Café:
Organizations, regardless of size, look to their Human Resource (HR) and Talent Development (TD) teams to support their people in times of need, including developing individuals/teams, along with finding new ways to address current problems. No one could have expected that would include a pandemic, but 2020 is anything but normal. HR/TD teams are being asked to help make sense of this “new norm, ” including how do we manage our people, keep them engaged, drive performance from afar, convert learning and networking to virtual, and how do we accelerate talent or move knowledge to the point of need, to name a few. These are the common questions I was getting as a coach or in everyday discussions, but what jumped out is when I brought groups together to discuss common challenges they discussed their current mitigation techniques, which sparked new ideas. The structured discussions caused individuals to think differently and identify more opportunities to attack their challenges head on.
Why are we doing this?
The knowledge each of us has individually, can only be outdone by our collective knowledge. The impact of collective shared knowledge is one reason why we (Valerie, Ty, Kathleen and myself) offered our time to hold this Knowledge Management (KM) World Café with you. We want to help facilitate a discussion that sparks new ideas to the challenges we are all facing. Over the last few weeks you provided us with the four topics you want to discuss during this event. They are included below, along with some additional information that may help frame the topic a little more.
Why should you attend? Hear from past participants!
“The World Café helped me identify creative ways to work within my budget.” – Functional Director
“The Café opened up my awareness to new industry tools and templates.” – Small Business Owner
“The World Café helped me avoid starting from Ground Zero because I leveraged the knowledge that already existed. This saved me a ton of time and money.” – Vice President
“The World Café helped me identify ways to help me balance work and home.” – Mother of three
Your colleagues’ chosen discussion topics in detail:
- The Remote Employee Lifestyle: The new norm includes larger remote workforces dealing with potential home challenges like home-schooling, elderly parents and much more. These dynamics change how we onboard, train our workforce, and accelerate individuals through specialized programs like High Potentials. This discussion will center around current challenges and what are some things we are doing that are showing positive signs to date. Discussion may include New Employee Orientation tips, self-development ideas like scavenger hunts, or Zoom sessions to promote networking.
- Performance/Productivity Challenges: Discussion will center around setting up goals, communicating performance effectively (positive or negative), supporting and training managers to lead and develop others remotely, working through new obstacles like schedule needs due to lack of daycare, and effectively providing rewards and recognition.
- Employee Engagement: Discussion will center around measuring and assessing employee engagement. This may include tips on industry best practices like Gallup’s Engagement process, home-grown methods, tips on retaining talent, and ways to measure flight risk, to name a few.
- Work-Life Challenges: Discussion will center around addressing today’s work-life challenges like being a fulltime employee, teacher, and caregiver or dealing with challenges as an extrovert in isolation. Discussion should include practical tips to help employees maintain a separation of work and home.
These are just a few examples of our potential discussion, but ultimately the discussions should be centered around your concerns in these four areas. Another benefit of these KM World Cafés is they are flexible. They can adjust based on the participants needs.
How will the breakout and discussions work?:
This KM World Café will open with an overview of us, KM and a World Café. Then we will go over the structure that includes breaking up the attendees into four sub-groups, with one facilitator assigned to each team. Once the sub-groups have been launched the facilitator will lead discussions on all four selected topics within the allotted timeframe. During each discussion participants will be encouraged to speak up, or place comments in the chat box on any challenges they are facing, things they have tried, lessons learned, and any brainstormed ideas that come up during the discussion.
Your role:
To best prepare and ultimately gain value for you and the organization you support we ask that you come with your challenges, questions, and current processes/solutions in place for each of the identified four topics. Take any notes, actions or follow-up questions you may have for your own situation, but in the end (~ one week later) we will provide a summarized list of the suggestions, tips, tools and resources identified during these discussions
Post event:
This final summary will provide you a menu of items you can look to implement within your specific situation. The sessions will be recorded, but only as support for any notes missed. Only Eric and Valerie will review the recordings to make sure we captured all the great ideas to include in the final report. In addition, we would like your help by answering a short survey that will help us identify what worked, what could have gone better, and where you may want some more information. Finally, feel free to reach out with any follow-up questions or requests you may have at any time. This World Café will be what we make of it. Come prepared with your challenges, questions and suggestions and we will come out with new ideas, gain additional perspective, and identify a few items we can each implement to address your most pressing, current challenges.
